What the BPM finder tells you

The BPM, with a decimal when it matters (93.5 isn't 94 if you're lining up a sample). Half and double time, because the same beat is written at 140 and felt at 70. Plus the key, the Camelot code and the compatible keys.

Typical BPM by genre

GenreUsual BPM
Reggaeton and dembow88-100
Trap130-160 (felt at 65-80)
Phonk and drift phonk120-150 (sometimes 160+)
Drill138-145
Classic hip hop / boom bap85-95
Afrobeats100-115
House120-128
Techno125-140
Drum and bass170-176

These are rough ranges. If the number is outside your genre's range, look at the half or the double.

Tempo sorted? Time to produce

Want tempo and key live, inside your DAW? The A-Radar Pro (€19 incl. taxes) reads them on a track while it plays. The A-Sampler FX loads your samples and loops with effects built for trap and phonk, the A-Vocal FX tunes and processes your vocal in the key you got here, and the A-Parallax measures your mix in LUFS, for free.

We measured it

We don't trust a "99% accurate" claim that doesn't say against what. So we measured it: 220 loops and beats with the key written in the file name and 157 with the tempo, taken from trap, reggaeton and phonk sample libraries. We ran the same files through our detector and through Essentia, the music analysis library from Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

≈ EssentiaKey

Exact key: 104 out of 220, Essentia 105. Key signature (the key or its relative): 128 out of 220, Essentia 123.

87 / 100Tempo

The BPM, or its half or double, on 87 out of 100 loops. Essentia: 83.

1.3 sA 4-minute song

Measured on an Apple-silicon Mac. It runs on your computer: no queue, no server.

File-name labels aren't perfect, and the key of a short loop or a pad with no bass is genuinely ambiguous, so no detector gets close to 100% on this kind of material. That's why we also show the second guess, the relative key and the half- and double-time BPM: if the first answer doesn't sound right, it's almost always one of those.

FAQ

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Drop it into the box above and in a few seconds you'll see its tempo in BPM, plus half and double time. No file? Tap along with the song on the tap tempo counter for 8 or 16 beats.

Why does it say 70 BPM when my beat is 140?

Both are the same pulse counted at a different speed: trap, drill and phonk are written at 140-160 but felt at 70-80. That's why we give you the BPM, its half and its double; use the one your DAW is set to.

What about reggaeton?

The dembow rhythm (3+3+2) fools many detectors into reading 4/3 of the real tempo: a 90 BPM reggaeton comes out at 120. Our engine looks for the pulse that always lands on a hit, not the one that matches now and then, so it does better on this style.

Is my song uploaded anywhere?

No. It's decoded and analyzed inside your browser. It never leaves your computer and we don't store it.

Which formats does it accept?

Whatever your browser can read: MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC and OGG almost always. If a file won't open, export it to WAV or MP3.

Is this a Tunebat alternative?

For finding the BPM and key of your own file, yes: drop it in and you're done, including unreleased music. No account, no usage limit, and the measurement is published.

Does it detect the key too?

Yes: every analysis gives you BPM and key together, with the Camelot code and the compatible keys for mixing.
